According to this article, Guatemala is becoming one of the most dangerous countries out there. As their crime rate continues to stay high, they are slowing becoming a failed state. Not only is it awful to see a country fail so badly, but it's even worse that it is occurring now in this generation. We are supposed to be improving in the world and not declining. Since 2009, there have been 14 million deaths in Guatemala due to violent crimes. That is way too high of a number and should not be allowed at all. It is said that in Guatemala 96% of the crimes go unpunished. If 96% of the crimes go unpunished, that leaves only 4% that are punishable. That is a ridiculous amount and needs to change soon. If the problem does not get fixed in Guatemala not only will it lead to worse situations in their own country, but it will have a huge impact on the world. It sickens me that in today's society things like this still happen. The main reason the crime rate is going up so high is because of Mexican drug trafficking. If countries such as Mexico and Guatemala are so strongly impacted by drug trafficking, the United States is next. Something needs to be done to help international violence because it is a hazard to our health.

  1. This is a truly awful thing that is happening. It is scary to think that because we are so close to this, that it could just come right into the USA. However, if it does, there is faith that the crimes and violence would not fly. Going back to Guatemala, there seems to be no way to stop it because the government is so corrupt. Clearly, something needs to be done, the question is HOW!

  2. The article and your analysis raise some very interesting and pressing concerns. While having such a disparity between the number of crimes and crimes punished is morally reprehensible, that kind of a track record is bad for the country of Guatemala itself. As stated by the U.S. Department of State, U.S. and Guatemalan trade has suffered historically because of crime, notably the drug trade (http://www.state.gov/r/pa/ei/bgn/2045.htm). The U.S. is Guatemala's largest trading partner, and rampant crime and narcotics threaten this relationship. In order for Guatemala to improve, the country will need to take harsh action against crimes.

  3. I can't believe that 96% of the people go unpunished! This usually happens where there is a corrupt government or the government has no proper control of the people. There are really no good solutions since the US can't just go in take over. At the same time breaking a cycle of a corrupt government is pretty much impossible since a corupt government will try to keep a corrupt government continuing.
