Blog #3 Poverty

http://www.poverty.com/internationalaid.html

According to this article all deaths due to disease and starvation can be stopped. In order to stop poverty, it will cost $195 billion dollars a year. The 22 wealthiest countries vowed to help. For every $100 made in each country, 0.7% would be donated to help poverty. The problem with this is that only five of the countries reached the goal. 11 of the countries are scheduled to meet it in the next 4 years, but 6 of the countries are nowhere scheduled to meet the goal. One of the countries that are not scheduled to meet the goal is the United States. I know people will jump to say why the United States should donate money when we need to help our country out first. What people don't see is that we as a country have several people in poverty and will be helping them do so. What they also don't see is that just because our country is in debt, doesn't mean that we have numerous wealthy people in this country that can help out. It sickens me that there are people in this world that have so much money and so much food, but people die every day because they don't.

  1. Megan, you make great points. America should help out their people first, and make sure that the problems here are on the rise to get better before we start spending all the money that raise elsewhere. It is so true that everywhere thinks just because we are the US that we can just give money left and right. We have BIG issues here as well.

  2. America certainly has many problems of its own, but so do other countries. America needs to continue national aid because no country can isolate itself in this globalized world. Maybe the United States should not make a pledge like your article and site suggest, but foreign aid needs to be a priority because in turn it helps the American economy by creating more markets and establishing good relations with other nations.
It is definitely difficult thinking about how people in the world are going hungry, yet we all have so much to eat.

For each correct answer, sponsors pay for ten grains of rice to be donated. It is an easy way for people, and especially students, who do not have much money to give to make a difference.

  3. That is incredible that the countries came to this agreement. I do agree that we should not be looked down upon since we have not been able to meet our standards. There are thousands of people here in Illinois that are going without food and live in poverty. I do agree that we should take care of our country first. Especially with the recent recession, the money should be used to help our country get back on its feet.
